GreeningUSA, a local non-profit organization focused on enhancing the sustainability of communities, will announce the recipients of its 2010 “Sustaining Our Communities” award at its seventh Annual Meeting to be held on May 4, 2011. In addition to traditional awards to individuals and organizations, this year's program will give special recognition to the City of Syracuse as the first community to complete the GreeningUSA 12 Traits of Sustainable Communities© program.
The annual meeting will run from 7:30 - 10 a.m. at Syracuse City Hall Commons, 201 E. Washington St. Because seating will be limited, advanced RSVP is required to attend.
The annual GreeningUSA “Sustaining Our Communities” award will be presented to up to five individuals, organizations or businesses in New York State who are leading their communities toward sustainability. This can apply to environmental, economic and/or social sustainability.
GreeningUSA launched its 12 Traits of Sustainable Communities rating system beta test nearly a year ago. Since then, a handful of municipalities have put the program through its paces to evaluate their sustainability performance in the 12 traits which range from economic development, water/waste management and sustainable energy to community enrichment. The City of Syracuse has been one of those beta testers and the first to successfully complete the process of sustainability evaluation. Representatives from the City will present their experiences with the 12 Traits program during GreeningUSA’s Annual Meeting and will be recognized with a special plaque reflecting the level of sustainability achieved under the program.
“The year long beta-test process allowed communities to use the program at no cost to them while providing GreeningUSA with useful feedback to make the program more accessible to more cities, counties, towns and villages around the country,” says Peter Arsenault, program director for the 12 Traits program. “This feedback is being incorporated into current updates of 12 Traits program.”
